POFMA

What is POFMA? POFMA is the Protection from Online Falsehoods and Manipulation Act (POFMA) governing public communications in Singapore. According to the POFMA website, POFMA's primary tools to counter online falsehoods are the correction directions - these directions do not require the online falsehood to be removed. In more serious cases, a stop communication or disabling direction may be used.

These directions can only be issued if:

  • A false statement of fact has been or is being communicated in Singapore through the Internet; and
  • It is in the public interest to issue the direction.

On 24 Oct 2021, TW was issued a POFMA correction direction for two articles. We've shifted these posts under this new category as standalone pages as the blog setup did not allow for a publishing of the correction notice right at the top of the page. Please note that the original URL has changed slightly as a result.

POFMA
Correction Direction (24 Oct 2021)

This article is the first of 2 specified to TW as containing a false statement of fact:
Vaccination increases COVID-19 infection and mortality rates
This statement is derived from the text: "The most vaccinated countries have the most cases and deaths per million population and the least vaccinated countries have the fewest cases and deaths per million population."

The false statement of fact is corrected to:
Vaccination does not increase COVID-19 infection and mortality rates
This correction is set out on the following basis: The latest scientific data does not support the claim that countries with the highest vaccination rates also have the highest cases/deaths per million population. While some countries with the lowest vaccination rates also have low reported COVID-19 deaths, this is likely due to poor record collection for both vaccinations and deaths.

POFMA Correction Direction (24 Oct 2021)

This article is the second of 2 specified to TW as containing a false statement of fact:
Current vaccines have no effect on the transmission of the COVID-19 virus
This statement is derived from the text:
"The vaccines Pfizer, Moderna, Astra Zeneca do not prevent the transmission of the virus person-to-person and the vaccinated are just as transmissive as the unvaccinated." (Dr. Luc Montagnier)
"Most people do not understand that the current experimental vaccines do not actually kill the virus; and that both the vaccinated and nonvaccinated shed the virus." (
Dr. Vanden Bossche)
"These vaccines do not stop viral transmission." (Dr. Vanden Bossche)

The false statement of fact is corrected to:
Vaccines reduce the risk of transmission of COVID-19
This correction is set out on the following basis: While the vaccines do not completely stop viral transmission, vaccines do indeed reduce the risk of transmission. Vaccinated persons are less likely to transmit the virus than unvaccinated persons. Furthermore, while the vaccine on its own does not kill the virus, it is false to suggest that the effect of the vaccine on the immune system does not lead to the killing of the virus. The vaccines cause the body to produce antibodies and immune cells that act against the virus and, in effect, kill it.

TW supports government efforts at controlling misinformation and online falsehoods through the judicious use of POFMA. We continue to welcome robust evidence-based debate, contributions and clarifications on the evolving research and facts surrounding COVID-19 from all parties.
